The Tracking Problem a VPN Actually Solves
Every time you browse the web, your internet provider knows which sites you're visiting, and your mobile carrier often does too. If you're using airport or hotel Wi-Fi, the network operator sits in the middle of that connection. The Shadow protocol
The technical draw is the Shadow protocol. Deep packet inspection systems look for the handshake signatures of standard VPN traffic and drop those connections, which is why mainstream apps stop working in Tehran or Shanghai. Shadow pairs an obfuscated proxy with the tunnel so the traffic reads as ordinary HTTPS. ZoogVPN publishes dated status checks for Shadow in China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, the UAE and Qatar, all green as of 23 July 2026.
Manual IP resolution covers the second half of that problem. Some governments block the VPN app itself rather than the protocol, so you cannot reach the login server to connect. - AES-256 encryption with WireGuard or OpenVPN. Skip anything advertising a proprietary protocol with no published details.
- A kill switch that cuts your connection when the tunnel drops. Without it, a two-second reconnect leaks your real IP to whatever you had open. Check which platforms it ships on.
- DNS leak protection. Your DNS queries have to travel inside the tunnel, or your ISP sees every domain anyway.
- A no-logs policy you can read, in plain language, naming what the company stores.
Worth comparing
- Device count, the difference between one subscription and two.
- Server locations near you for speed, and in the regions whose content you want.
